Marketing, Sales, People … The focus of my profession
I am a marketing professional with experience in corporate and consulting environments, where my training, experience, and curiosity have been directed toward improvements in product design, marketing communications, and sales effectiveness. My family called me “the salesman” from a very early age. At age 8 or 9, I began my first entrepreneurial venture. I made my pitch to every “little old lady” … at my age everyone over 40 qualified for that category. In the winter I had all the snow shoveling jobs I could handle. In the summer I did yard work and handyman jobs. Those were my day jobs. As one of the older kids in a growing family (ultimately 8 kids) my evenings were often filled by childcare gigs … we called it babysitting, back then.
So, I’m interested in business ideas … and human psychology … communications methods and tools.
During my senior year in college I got my first job as a consultant; working with a professor doing market research, developing business strategy, and testing marketing campaign ideas. I loved the work and the opportunity to help organizations do something new. My primary project resulted in cattle (beef) being “branded” for the first time after they went to market. I helped introduce “Iowa Corn-Fed Beef.”
In my first corporate job, I was responsible for creating a Market Research function for Blue Cross Blue Shield organization. Market Research was new and no one had yet heard of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. I led the development of a system that soon became the heart of enterprise systems being sold to other Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations. So, I’m interested in Information Technology.
Since those early days, I have learned a lot more about marketing, sales, and IT.
Now, I am quite interested in the Internet, Social Media, and tools that help us live richer lives.
These are the topics I expect to talk about most.
